Kaiser Bargaining 2026

Update on Kaiser ATB Wage Increases- Retro Pay Back to March 15 Expected 2-3 Weeks Later
Today Kaiser informed us that across-the-board (ATB) wage increases and longevity raises will be seen in your June 26 paychecks for all Southern California UFCW Kaiser members. Additionally, retro pay will be paid effective back to March 15, 2026 as soon as administratively feasible, typically 2-3 pay periods following the initial ATB/wage scale adjustment check.
The Alliance has tried to work with the company to resolve our PSP concerns, but the company refused to make any adjustments. So UFCW has filed an all affected grievance for the most recent PSP bonus.
Lastly, we’re restarting partnership activities, including UBTs, LMP trainings, LMP Councils, staffing committees, attendance committees, and more. Many of you are understandably angry with Kaiser because of the contract, but these spaces are where you can make your voice heard. Without you, management will unilaterally make decisions on your behalf or take advantage of your absence in these activities.
We’ll keep you updated on any new information we learn, but if you have any questions, please reach out to your Steward, or Union Representative.

Our contract with Kaiser Permanente has been ratified!
We came together with thousands of our UFCW siblings to vote YES! Learn what happens next
Our new four-year contract with Kaiser Permanente has been ratified by an overwhelming majority of votes! Because of our countless Solidarity Tuesdays, petitions, speaking out on social media and in the news, and our powerful three-day unfair labor practice strike, we won a historic UFCW-wide contract that delivers:
- 21.5% ATB wage increases (plus additional increases) bringing the total value to 25% – 30% for many members
- Improved PSP formula
- Increased longevity premiums
- Contract alignment across all of UFCW (nine separate expiration dates will be aligned into one common expiration date)
Additionally, at our local tables, we won:
Southern California CLS/MLT
- Increased longevity pay
- Additional paid time for educational programs for benefited members
Southern California Pharmacy
- Longevity increases
- Additional differential pay for ambulatory oncology hours
What’s next?
Return to Partnership
Effective Monday, March 30, 2026, we will return to full participation in partnership activities, where we’ll begin discussions on how we can reconstitute, clarify, and strengthen the Labor Management Partnership between the Alliance and all of its member unions and Kaiser Permanente. We’ll keep you posted on what that will look like moving forward.
Local Bargaining Power
Another important change moving forward is that all issues that were previously handled nationally will now be included in local agreements. This means local bargaining committees will have greater control over the issues that most affect members in their facilities and regions, while still coordinating with other Alliance unions when needed.
Stay Ready, Stay United
This campaign was unlike any we’ve run before, and because of the strength and solidarity we showed this time around, we’re only going to be that much stronger when we come back to the table in four years. Kaiser has shown that they are willing to go to extremes to keep us from getting the contracts we deserve. So stay ready, stay united, and stay connected with your co-workers and your KP siblings across facilities, locals, and the country. Together, we’re more powerful than ever!
If you have any questions, please reach out to your Bargaining Committee Member, Steward, or Union Representative.

UFCW has reached a tentative agreement with Kaiser Permanente -But nothing is final until you vote!
After meeting with our bargaining committee to review the offer, we, as well as all other UFCW local unions, have reached a tentative agreement with Kaiser Permanente. Electronic voting will take place March 19, 9am – March 20, 4pm.
Wage Increases
All Alliance unions, including UFCW and UNAC/UHCP, have secured the same across-the-board wage increases totaling 21.5% over the life of the agreement. This offer includes additional economic improvements such as market adjustments, premiums, longevity, shift differentials and step increases, which bring the total value to 25% – 30% for many UFCW members.
With this tentative agreement, Kaiser members won:
-
- 21.5% ATB wage increases (plus additional increases) bringing the total value to 25% – 30% for many members
- Improved PSP formula
- Increased longevity premiums
- Contract alignment across all of UFCW (9 separate expiration dates will be aligned into 1 common expiration date)
Hear more about the contract improvements and get answers to your questions in one of our webinars:

Kaiser walked away from the national table and many local bargaining tables in December. The company only returned to serious negotiations after we gave a strike notice and conducted a powerful 3-day strike. Since then, KP continued bargaining until agreements were reached. Most of these improvements were achieved after the UFCW strike.
Local Bargaining Power
Another important change is that all issues that were previously handled nationally will now be included in local agreements. This means local bargaining committees will have greater control over the issues that most affect members in their facilities and regions, while still coordinating with other Alliance unions when needed.
One Trade Off
The biggest drawback is that there will not be retroactive pay for the time since the previous agreement expired. However, retroactivity is built into the next contract cycle as part of the transition to the new aligned expiration dates.
Voting:
Electronic voting will take place Thursday March 19 at 9am, and will conclude 4pm on Friday, March 20. You will be sent a secret and secure ballot link to your email address and/or cell phone on file with UFCW 1428.
If you have any questions about the tentative agreement or anything that happened at the bargaining table, please reach out to your Bargaining Committee Member, Steward, or Union Representative.

UFCW International has reached a proposed settlement with Kaiser Permanente
After months of negotiating, countless Solidarity Tuesdays, delivering petitions to management, speaking out on social media, and an impactful three-day strike, UFCW International has reached a proposed settlement with Kaiser Permanente on a new four-year contract. This proposed agreement delivers across-the-board increases, contract alignment across UFCW, a fair PSP, wage equity for Kern, and additional funding for Ben Hudnall.
We are in the process of reviewing details with our bargaining committees. We will update you on Friday with the bargaining committees’ recommendations and details about upcoming meetings for you to review the proposal and get answers to your questions.
What’s Included in the Proposed UFCW Agreement:
The agreement includes 21.5% in wage increases over four years, with the majority of increases coming early in the agreement:
○ 6.5% in March 2026
○ 6.5% in October 2026
○ 3% in August 2027
○ 2.5% in October 2027
○ 3% in October 2028
The agreement also includes additional wage grid and market adjustments across classifications.
Finally, we were able to achieve contract alignment and a common expiration date across all UFCW Locals, strengthening our ability to move forward together in future negotiations.
What We Protected
The agreement also preserves important benefits members rely on, including pensions and
employer contributions, the partnership agreement, and additional funding for the Ben Hudnall Trust Fund.
Additionally, we previously reached tentative agreements at our Local Pharmacy, CLS/MLT, and Kern tables that contain important gains:
Southern California Local CLS/MLT TA
In late September, we reached a tentative agreement on our KP CLS/MLT contract. We secured contract upgrades, including increased longevity pay at each step and additional paid time for educational programs for benefited members.
Southern California Local Pharmacy TA
In early October, we reached a tentative agreement for KP pharmacy employees, addressing schedule rotations, on-call, and registry workers. We also secured language clarifying the rotation process and won longevity increases and additional differential pay for hours worked in the ambulatory oncology setting.
What’s Next
More details on the UFCW International and Local agreements, and your opportunity to review and vote, will be shared with members in an upcoming webinar. You will receive a link to register shortly.
If you have any questions about anything that happened at the bargaining table, reach out to your Bargaining Committee Member, Steward, or Union Representative.

Kaiser’s PSP Payout Amounts Are Unacceptable! – We’re Fighting Back!
We have heard from Kaiser workers that they are receiving PSP payouts as low as $60 this year. This is unacceptable! That amount does not reflect your hard work, your dedication to patients, or the sacrifices you made over the past year.
Kaiser is attempting to blame these low payouts on the strike. We know that is not true. Before the strike ever began, Kaiser was already claiming that financial gates had not been met. Now they are attempting to implement low PSP payouts to divide us.
We feel that this is a form of retaliation. Southern California is the only region where Kaiser has not released the official scorecard to justify these PSP amounts. If their numbers are legitimate, they should have no problem showing the scorecard.
We will not allow Kaiser to punish workers for exercising our legal right to stand together. UFCW and our Alliance partners are fighting back to make sure you get what you have earned.
Stay united. Stay informed. Rely on your union as your source for updates.
If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to your Union Representative or Steward.
In solidarity,
Your UFCW Kaiser Bargaining Committee

Updates on the Bargaining Process and Our PSP bonus

You will also have the opportunity to get your questions answered.
PSP Bonus Update
We’ll also be discussing the latest on the PSP payouts on our webinars. Kaiser Permanente has determined that Southern California did not meet its financial threshold for 2025 and is issuing the lowest PSP payout across KP this cycle.
We reject this assertion.
You show up for patients everyday. Through chronic understaffing, a pandemic and tough negotiations, you continue to do the work. We know you met the goals placed in front of you. We will not accept a result that shifts responsibility onto frontline caregivers while KP controls the financial gate.
The Alliance is actively challenging Kaiser’s determination. We are demanding full transparency into their data and calculations and are preparing formal disputes where warranted. We have successfully fought and won PSP disputes before, and we are prepared to do it again.
Here’s what we know:
- The PSP payment date for Southern California is March 6
- Under our National Agreement, even if KP claims it did not meet financial targets, Alliance members remain eligible for up to $1,000 if PSP goals are met.
- The Affordability metric makes up 67% of the PSP. Southern California met a prorated affordability target under the contract which should entitle members to a higher payout than Kaiser is currently offering.
Let’s be clear, we will not rubber-stamp a payout that shortchanges Southern California members. We are fighting for an increased PSP payout, and we will use every tool in our contract to get it.
You earned this. And we will fight for what you are owed.
We’ll discuss the PSP payment, the bargaining process, and how the Alliance is fighting for what you deserve on our webinars.
If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to your Union Representative or Steward.

Kaiser Update: Alliance Counter-Proposal, New ULP Strike Authorizations, Local Table Progress
One week after our historic ULP Strike against Kaiser Permanente, things in the Alliance are moving quickly.
Here’s what’s new:
- Today, the Alliance delivered a comprehensive package proposal to Kaiser Permanente that resolves and protects our National Agreement and delivers a clear message to KP: It’s time to settle the National Agreement. Read more about the proposal here.
- UFCW Local 1996 members in Georgia overwhelmingly voted today in favor of an Unfair Labor Practice strike authorization.
- UNAC optometrists also approved a ULP strike authorization earlier this week.
- Progress continues to be made at local bargaining tables on local issues, and all Alliance unions are united in their demand for a return to National Bargaining.
Local 1428’s food panty is available for anyone experiencing food insecurities at this time. Please call or visit our office if you are in need or have questions.
As always, don’t trust rumors or statements from managers or the company during a labor dispute. Official updates will come directly from your union. Keep wearing your UFCW 1428 gear to show your solidarity. Continue to stay strong and ready for whatever comes in our fight for a fair contract.

February 11, 2026 – ULP Srike Day 3
Three-day ULP Strike Shows Kaiser UFCW Unity and Strength.
Return to Work Tomorrow February 12 at 5:00AM
Rain or shine we showed Kaiser exactly who UFCW members are: united, determined, and unafraid to stand up.
Over the past three days, you demonstrated real strength. You stood up to unlawful bargaining delays. You stood up for each other. And you sent a clear message to Kaiser: return to National Bargaining and finish a fair agreement that protects workers and patients.
Here’s what we accomplished over these three days:
- Massive participation of UFCW members across Southern California
- Strong community and patient support
- Statewide and national media coverage
- Solidarity from unions across California and beyond
- You showed Kaiser that they couldn’t survive without you.
The strike officially ends tomorrow, Thursday, February 12 at 5:00 AM. You should report to your regularly scheduled shift (including night shifts) at 5:00 AM on Thursday or after 5:00 AM if your regularly scheduled shift starts after 5:00 AM. If you are scheduled before 5:00 AM, do not report until 5:00 AM. For example, if you are scheduled from 12:00AM – 7:00AM, you would report at 5:00AM and work until 7:00AM. Resume your normal duties and continue providing the professional care your patients rely on.
Returning to work does not mean this fight is over. A ULP strike is designed to deliver fast, public pressure tied directly to Kaiser breaking the law. UFCW heard your concerns before we went out on strike and chose to do a three day ULP strike to keep our members protected from losing healthcare and more while also putting pressure on Kaiser.
And we did put pressure on Kaiser. For the first time since December, Kaiser has shown incremental movement. UFCW Local 7 reached a TA at their local table. UNAC/UHCP is making progress at their local tables. And more Alliance unions will be issuing 10-day notices within the coming days. All because of the strength you demonstrated over the last three days.
Our strength and solidarity this week proved we are prepared to escalate again if Kaiser refuses to respect workers. Kaiser is doing everything they can to break the unions and the Alliance, so remain strong to do what it takes to get the contract we deserve.
Our demands remain unchanged: Kaiser must return to the national bargaining table, end their surveillance, intimidation, and retaliation against workers, and stop blocking access to Union Representatives.
Continue supporting UNAC/UHCP on the lines. Continue talking to your co-workers and union siblings. Continue reporting ULPs.Continue holding Kaiser accountable. And if Kaiser breaks the law again, we will be back on the picket line.
Thank you for standing up for your co-workers and your patients this week.
If you have questions, reach out to your Bargaining Committee member, Steward, or Union Representative.

February 10, 2026 – ULP Strike Day 2
United, Determined, and Backed by Our Communities
Day two of our Unfair Labor Practice strike made one thing unmistakably clear, Kaiser workers are united, determined, and backed by the full support of our patients and our communities.
This ULP strike was designed to apply immediate, public pressure on Kaiser to end its unlawful behavior and return to bargaining in good faith. And they definitely heard us.
Having shown our strength, unity, and resolve, we will return to the picket line TOMORROW, 2/11, as planned to finish strong. We will return to work on Thursday, February 12 at 5:00 AM.
Here’s what we accomplished together on Day 2:
- Continued strong action at facilities across Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside, Ventura, and Kern Counties
- Thousands of workers and community allies showing up in support throughout the day
- Sustained local, statewide, and national media coverage
- Growing engagement and reach across social media
- Ongoing solidarity from union siblings across California and beyond
What’s next:
We’ll continue to push Kaiser to come back to the national table and negotiate a fair contract. And if they break the law again we will come back to the picket line.
Kaiser has the full power to prevent this from happening again. To stop disrupting the lives and the care of our patients. All they need to do is bargain in good faith.
We continue to demand that Kaiser:
- Return to the national bargaining table
- End surveillance, intimidation, and retaliation against workers
- Stop blocking access to Union Representatives
If you have questions, reach out to your Bargaining Committee member, Steward, or Union Representative.
Together, we can win a contract that provides for the healthcare workers who keep our communities healthy and safe.
In solidarity,
Your UFCW Kaiser Bargaining Committee

February 9, 2026 – ULP Strike Day 1
Thousands of Kaiser Workers Show Kaiser That We Won’t Stand for Kaiser’s Unlawful Activity
Today, thousands of Kaiser workers and supporters showed up and showed out, walking off the job at Kaiser locations throughout Southern California to protest the company’s unlawful actions.
We told Kaiser loud and clear that we won’t stand for the company to refuse to bargain nationally, surveil workers, retaliate against them for union activity, and block us from talking to our Union Representatives.
Here’s what we accomplished together today:
- Workers walked out at dozens of facilities in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside, Ventura, and Kern Counties
- Thousands of workers and supporters joined the picket line
- Hundreds of news stories published about the ULP strike
- Tens of thousands of views on social media
- Millions of our union siblings across California showed their support
What’s next:
Our ULP strike continues! Remember, we’re on strike 24/7 until you hear from the union! Do not report to work at all! Picketing is held from 7:00AM – 3:00PM each day to show Kaiser we’re standing up for our rights.
If you have questions, reach out to your Bargaining Committee Member, Steward, or Union Representative.

February 8, 2026 – Pre-strike update
Our Kaiser ULP Strike Starts tomorrow morning, Monday, February 9 at 7:00am
Get the latest updates and resources so you are strike ready
Tomorrow morning, Monday, February 9 at 7:00am, All UFCW Kaiser pharmacy and clinical lab members across Southern California and Bakersfield will begin an Unfair Labor Practice strike.
We’re at this moment because Kaiser management chose to break from the agreed upon national bargaining process, walk away from negotiations, and violate federal labor law. Our members gave Kaiser every opportunity to do the right thing and stop their unfair labor practices. Kaiser refused.
Every Alliance union has rejected Kaiser’s effort to divide us and end the national agreement. Kaiser wrote to every local union proposing local bargaining on national issues. Every Alliance union told Kaiser no and referred Kaiser back to our national bargaining committee.
Now, we move forward together.
More than 3,000 UFCW pharmacy and lab workers will be present at picket lines across the region, alongside 31,000 nurses and healthcare professionals with UNAC/UHCP who have already taken ULP strike action. This level of unity sends a clear message that frontline healthcare workers will not be sidelined or silenced.
As you prepare for tomorrow, know that you have the full support of your community, patients, and union siblings. Kaiser can break the law, but they cannot break our solidarity.
What to Know for February 9th
- You will receive notification from your union confirming the strike will begin at 7:00am. Once you receive that notification, do not go into work or continue working after 7:00am. Report to your assigned picket location instead.
- Look out for one another and follow strike guidance
- Check your local union communications regularly for updates and resources
Tomorrow is about unity, visibility, and collective power. Kaiser needs to see our strength, the public needs to hear our message, and management needs to understand that we will not accept delays or disrespect.
You are part of something powerful. You are not alone.

UFCW Southern California Kaiser Unions Issue 10-Day ULP Strike Notice -A ULP strike will begin on Monday, February 9, 2026 at 7am
Today, UFCW local unions representing Kaiser Pharmacy and CLS/MLT members across Southern California delivered a 10-day Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike notice to Kaiser Permanente executives! A ULP strike will begin on Monday, February 9, 2026 at 7am.
Under federal law, health care unions must provide at least 10 days’ notice before a strike to protect patient care and allow hospitals time to prepare. DO NOT WALK OFF THE JOB BEFORE 7AM ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2026.
National negotiations have been stalled for over a month after Kaiser management walked away from the bargaining table. In December, UFCW and the other Alliance Unions filed Unfair Labor Practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), alleging Kaiser unlawfully refused to bargain in an attempt to bypass the agreed-upon national bargaining process and interfere with good-faith negotiations that had been ongoing since April 2025.
Kaiser has engaged in the following Unfair Labor Practices:
- Suspending national collective bargaining negotiations without cause.
- Denying access to union representatives when workers request support.
- Surveilling, intimidating, and interrogating workers over union activity, watching who wears pins, who attends meetings, and who speaks up.
That’s why Kaiser frontline pharmacy and CLS/MLT healthcare workers all over Southern California will be ULP striking – to protest the company’s labor violations throughout negotiations that have prevented them from getting the fair contract they deserve. All UFCW Kaiser pharmacy and CLS/MLT members will be on strike. Picket lines will be held at certain Kaiser locations.
With this action, UFCW members will be protesting Kaiser’s illegal actions alongside the more than 31,000 UNAC/UHCP frontline registered nurses and health professionals who will have been on strike since Monday, January 26, 2026.
We need to all band together in solidarity to make these actions as effective as possible. Here’s how you can support the upcoming ULP strike right now:

January 23, 2026 – All Kaiser Members
We Voted YES! ULP Strike Authorization Overwhelmingly Passes!
We’ve had enough of Kaiser’s union-busting tactics and illegal actions that undermine critical healthcare workers, and we’ve spoken loud and clear.
This week, CLS/MLT members across Southern California came together and overwhelmingly voted YES to authorize an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike against Kaiser for suspending national collective bargaining negotiations, denying access to a union representative, surveilling, intimidating, and interrogating workers over Union activity and several other unfair labor practices against our siblings in the Alliance of Healthcare Unions. This vote sends a strong message to Kaiser: We’ve had enough of their union-busting tactics that undermine workers and silence our voices. They need to stop delaying, stop trying to divide the Alliance of Healthcare Unions, and get back to negotiating a fair contract.
What does this mean?
With this strike authorization vote, CLS/MLT members are now prepared to join forces with both our UFCW pharmacy members, who previously authorized an Unfair Labor Practice Strike in October 2025, and our Alliance siblings at UNAC/UHCP.
It does not mean we are on an Unfair Labor Practice strike right now. If you walk off the job before the union declares a strike, you can be disciplined and/or fired. Right now, we’re still assessing the situation and developing the most effective strategy to ensure you get the contract you deserve. Remember, you will always be the first to know when we take action.
What’s next?
Kaiser continues to try and divide unions in the Alliance to stop us from standing together for what we deserve. We are fed up with being overworked, disrespected, and undervalued, and Kaiser wants us to remain that way. We won’t let that happen.
Demand KP leadership end the delays and distractions and to return to the National Bargaining table. Sign the letter here

January 16, 2026 – All Kaiser Members
Kaiser continues to refuse to bargain in good faith. Tell them to come back to the table now! All UFCW Kaiser member webinars will be held on Wednesday, January 21 at 9AM and 7PM
What’s happening with bargaining?
Kaiser continues to refuse to bargain in good faith, delaying negotiations because we are standing firm on the demands you deserve. Instead of addressing the real issues at the bargaining table, Kaiser is distracting members with false accusations about UNAC/UHCP.
In response to Kaiser’s delay tactics, UNAC has issued a 10-day strike notice. Currently, UFCW, UNAC and all the Alliance Unions are developing a unified strategy to secure the best possible contract.
We’re still fighting for the issues that impact your work, your patients, and your livelihoods, including across-the-Board Increases (ATBs), contract alignment, safe staffing, retroactive pay, wage equity for our Kern County members, a fair Performance Sharing Program, first contracts without takeaways, and a strong voice for professional caregivers in patient care.
These issues are essential, not only for delivering safe, high‑quality care, but also for retaining the dedicated healthcare workers who keep Kaiser running every day.
Now is the moment to increase the pressure and push Kaiser back to the national bargaining table to settle a fair agreement. Kaiser wants to divide us using classic anti‑union tactics that are wrapped in polished messaging aimed at turning members against their co-workers and their unions. We will not allow that.
What can you do?

While Kaiser stalls bargaining, UFCW is taking action. We’re holding ULP strike authorization votes for UFCW Kaiser CLS/MLT members
A month later, and we’re still waiting on Kaiser to come back to the bargaining table. Over 25 local contracts remain open with critical open issues, and important national issues still remain unresolved: contract alignment, equity funding, staffing levels, a fair PSP, retroactive wage increases, and caregiver voice in patient care.
While Kaiser stalls bargaining, UFCW is taking action.
Kaiser has broken the law by suspending national collective bargaining negotiations and denying you access to your union representatives at work. These Unfair Labor Practices (ULP) harm our ability to communicate with you and protect your rights.
In response to their unlawful behavior, we’re holding ULP strike authorization votes for UFCW Kaiser CLS/MLT members January 22 and 23, 2026. Kaiser pharmacy members previously took a ULP Strike authorization vote in October, so they remain ready to go out on an Unfair Labor Practice strike if the bargaining committee feels one is necessary.
To help CLS members understand what’s happening with negotiations and the CLS ULP strike vote, we’re holding webinars on Wednesday, January 21st at 9am and 7pm.

We know Kaiser is attempting to hire scabs in case of a strike. This is a scare tactic meant to undermine our leverage. We must stay united with our Alliance siblings as we fight for the respect, dignity, and contract that every worker deserves.

Stay focused. Stay united. Trust verified information. – Nothing will stop us from winning the contract you’ve earned and deserve
We know there’s a lot of information circulating right now, and it can feel overwhelming. Please remember that not everything you hear is accurate, and misinformation can easily create distraction.
Let’s stay focused on what truly matters: securing a fair contract for every member. We will not allow distractions to derail our fight.
Remain strong, remain united within your departments, and always verify information through trusted sources such as your local unions and representatives. Our strength lies in our solidarity, and together we are unstoppable.
Here’s where things stand at the table:
- Kaiser is refusing to bargain, which is an unfair labor practice
- Our contract fight is about more than wages, despite Kaiser’s messaging
- Over 25 local contracts remain open with critical unresolved issues
- The national issues that remain unresolved include contract alignment, equity funding, staffing levels, a fair PSP, retroactive wage increases, and caregiver voice in patient care
We must stay united with Alliance siblings as we fight for the respect, dignity, and contract that every worker deserves.
When we fight, we win!

Our KP Contract Fight Is About More Than Wages – Watch the update to understand what is really holding up an agreement
National Bargaining Update
Yesterday was the final scheduled day of national bargaining with Kaiser in San Diego. Instead of continuing negotiations, Kaiser chose to pause bargaining. We have made it clear that this refusal to bargain is an unfair labor practice.
Key points from the table:
- Kaiser paused negotiations rather than move forward on key issues
- This dispute is about more than wages, despite Kaiser’s messaging
- Over 25 local contracts remain open with critical unresolved issues
- National issues remain unresolved, including contract alignment, equity funding, staffing levels, a fair PSP, retroactive wage increases, and caregiver voice in patient care

Kaiser Bargaining Remains Difficult – SoCal UFCW Remains United in Push for Contract We Deserve
This week and last week’s negotiations with Kaiser were difficult, with little progress at the National bargaining table. We did achieve a minor TA on language around lactation time, but Kaiser hasn’t moved on their economic proposals – and neither did we. Despite Kaiser’s stalling tactics, we remain united in our push for contract alignment, fair wage increases, pay equity, and a voice in staffing. Our goal is to get a contract we can recommend to you, and we’re coming back to the table for National Bargaining next Tuesday, November 4, to push for that.
In the meantime, the Labor Management Partnership (LMP) is still on hold. Do not participate in any LMP related activities until further notice.
Pharmacy ULP Strike Update
Striking is always our last resort, but pharmacy members must remain strike-ready in response to Kaiser’s Unfair Labor Practices. If the Bargaining Committee decides it’s time to issue our 10-day ULP strike notice, you will be notified by your UFCW Local.
Our vote and picket captain meetings prepare Kaiser Pharmacy members to take action when the Pharmacy contract expires tomorrow, November 1. It does not mean we are on an Unfair Labor Practice strike right now. If you walk off the job before the union declares a strike, you can be disciplined and/or fired. REMEMBER: your local is the best source of information, and you’ll hear ANY news from us first.
CLS members – since your contract doesn’t expire until next year, you can’t strike at this time, but you can support Alliance siblings as well as your UFCW siblings should they be forced to strike. This misalignment in expiration dates is one of our key priorities in these negotiations as aligning our contracts strengthens our collective voice and ensures we can stand together in true unity.
Upcoming Meetings
To keep everyone informed and answer your questions, we’ll be hosting two upcoming webinars. Register using the links below:

October 15, 2025 – Kaiser ULP Update (All KP members)
KP Pharmacy Members Voted YES! ULP Strike Authorization Overwhelmingly Passes!
Strike Vote a big wake up call to Kaiser
We’ve spoken loud and clear.
This week, 2,200 Kaiser Permanente Pharmacy members across Southern California came together and overwhelmingly voted YES to authorize an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike against Kaiser for breaking the law.
This vote sends a strong message to Kaiser: We’ve had enough of their union-busting tactics that undermine workers and silence our voices. And if they thought Kaiser members could be scared away from standing up for our rights, they just found out that they are very wrong.
What does this mean?
This vote prepares Kaiser Pharmacy members to take action when the Pharmacy contract expires November 1. It does not mean we are on an Unfair Labor Practice strike right now. If you walk off the job before the union declares a strike, you can be disciplined and/or fired. REMEMBER: your local is the best source of information, and you’ll hear ANY news from us first.
Meanwhile, Alliance unions OFNHP, UNAC/UHCP, USW Local 7600, UNITE HERE Local 5, and HNHP went on strike on Tuesday and will remain on strike until Sunday, October 19. Reach out to your local union for information on how to support an Alliance strike line near you before/after your shift, or on your lunch break.
CLS members – since your contract doesn’t expire until next year, you can’t strike at this time, but you can support Alliance siblings as well as your UFCW siblings should they be forced to strike. This misalignment in expiration dates is one of the things we are trying to fix in these negotiations.
What’s next?
An Unfair Labor Practice strike is always a last resort, and we will continue to push Kaiser to do the right thing and come back to the table to bargain in good faith. We are hopeful that Kaiser will get its act together after witnessing the 46,000 Alliance workers on strike this week and seeing that UFCW is ready to join a potential second wave of a strike. With this strike vote, we’re now prepared to join forces with our Alliance siblings if Kaiser continues to commit unfair labor practices that undermine our rights. Remember, you will always be the first to know when we take action.
The pause in LMP Partnership continues. Until further notice, UFCW will suspend participation in LMP councils, committees, and initiatives, while continuing all contractual meetings and grievance processes.
If you have any questions about what’s happening at the table, the ULP strike authorization, or anything else, reach out to your Bargaining Committee Member, Steward, or Union Representative.
In solidarity,
Your Kaiser Bargaining Committees

October 10, 2025 – Kaiser Update All Tables
After two days, no movement from Kaiser at the National Table
- Pharmacy Strike Authorization Voting Begins Monday October 13
- Sibling Unions Set to Strike October 14
National Bargaining
After two days of National Bargaining with Kaiser Permanente, they have refused to make any movement on the across-the-board wages, contract alignment, patient care/staffing, and pay equity. Kaiser is wasting our time, while a strike by our sibling unions is imminent
On Friday, October 3, five Alliance unions – OFNHP, UNAC/UHCP, USW Local 7600, UNITE HERE Local 5, and HNHP – issued 10-day strike notices to Kaiser Permanente. With no movement from Kaiser over these last two days, and no more bargaining dates set, they may be forced to strike starting October 14 at 7:00 a.m. (local time) through Sunday, October 19. This is a powerful moment of solidarity and strength across our Alliance. Reach out to your local union for information on how to support an Alliance strike line near you before/after your shift, or on your lunch break.
Pause in LMP Partnership
UFCW, in solidarity with other Alliance unions who may be forced to strike on October 14, has paused participation in Labor Management Partnership (LMP) activities effective noon PST on October 8, 2025. This decision follows a growing pattern of disregard for partnership principles, including delays, scripted responses, and a lack of genuine collaboration.
The LMP was designed to strengthen Kaiser Permanente through shared problem-solving and improved patient care, but it cannot function when leadership stops listening. After nearly three decades of proven success in quality, safety, and affordability, Kaiser’s failure to uphold these values marks a breaking point. Until further notice, UFCW will suspend participation in LMP councils, committees, and initiatives, while continuing all contractual meetings and grievance processes.
If you have any questions, reach out to your union rep.
CLS
We previously reached tentative agreements at the local table but we are not done. Our work continues until the national agreement is complete. We will also need to support our siblings in the pharmacy unit during their strike vote and if they go on strike.
Pharmacy ULP Strike Vote
Kaiser has engaged in UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICES in an attempt to weaken our ability to achieve a fair contract at the bargaining table.
UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICES are actions that intimidate, interfere, or limit your ability to exercise your rights under the law or your contract. They include actions meant to undermine our power to negotiate collectively, including unlawfully surveilling and intimidating members engaging in union activities connected to your contract campaign.
KAISER HAS ENGAGED IN THE FOLLOWING UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICES:
- Denying access to a union representative
- Failure to provide information necessary to bargaining
- Surveilling, intimidating, and interrogating workers over Union activity
- Several other unfair labor practices against our siblings in the Alliance of Healthcare Unions
Kaiser Pharmacy workers are taking part in an Unfair Labor Practice (ULPs) Strike Authorization Vote. Your Kaiser Pharmacy bargaining committee recommends a “YES” vote to authorize a ULP strike.
Voting Period
- Start date: Monday, October 13, 2025 (8:00 AM)
- End date: Wednesday, October 15, 2025 (4:00 PM)
Voting will be conducted via the secure online platform ElectionBuddy. Check your email and text messages for your unique voting link and instructions. To be able to vote, please make sure we have your up-to-date and accurate email address and/or cell phone number on file. If you do not receive your ballot on Monday morning, please contact your union representative.
CLS members – while your contract doesn’t expire until next year, and you can’t strike at this time, please support your UFCW siblings as they take this crucial vote. Continue to share your stories on social media, wear your union shirts, and show your solidarity!
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the voting process, or anything else, please reach out to your Steward, Union Rep, or Bargaining Committee Member.

Oct 4, 2025 – Kaiser Update All Members
Our Alliance Siblings Have Issued a 10-Day Strike Notice – UFCW Pharmacy members take ULP strike authorization votes the week of October 13
Yesterday, our sibling locals in the Alliance of Health Care Unions, HNHP, UNAC/UHCP, UNITE HERE Local 5, OFNHP Local 5017, and USW 7600, issued 10-day strike notices to Kaiser.
National and local bargaining continues next week October 6-10. If no agreement is reached, our siblings will begin a five-day strike starting at 7:00 AM on October 14. This collective action sends a powerful message to Kaiser about the need to bargain in good faith and respect frontline healthcare workers.
UFCW is also taking action.
Kaiser has broken the law by interfering with our rights, denying access to union representatives from you at work. This is an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP), and harms our ability to communicate with you and protect your rights.
In response, we’re holding ULP strike authorization votes for UFCW Kaiser Pharmacy members the week of October 13.
To help all Kaiser members understand the Pharmacy ULP strike vote, and how we can support our striking siblings on the picket line, we’re holding webinars on Thursday, October 9th at 8am and 7pm.
CLS Members – while your contract doesn’t expire, and you can’t strike at this time, please attend the webinars below to learn more about the current state of negotiations, and how you can help support your siblings in both UFCW and the Alliance.

October 1, 2025 – All Tables
Our Kaiser National Agreement Has Expired
Our National Agreement between Kaiser Permanente and the 22 Alliance of Health Care Unions expired this morning. While national bargaining continued this week, we also worked at our local CLS and Pharmacy tables to resolve remaining items. After several long days and late nights, we reached tentative agreements on our CLS and Pharmacy contracts.
However, at the national table we remain far apart on key issues: contract alignment and fair wage increases. No significant progress has been made on these priorities, and our work continues until national bargaining is fully resolved.
Pharmacy
After long negotiations, we reached a tentative agreement at the pharmacy table early Wednesday morning. Productive discussions with management addressed schedule rotations, on-call, and registry workers. We secured language clarifying the rotation process and held firm against introducing on-call or registry workers. We also agreed to continue discussions on staffing during community disasters. Late into the night, we secured wins on longevity increases and additional differential pay for hours worked in the ambulatory oncology setting.
While this is a tentative agreement at the pharmacy table, we are not done. Our work continues until the national agreement is complete.
While we are working hard to secure a good contract, Kaiser is breaking the law, refusing to allow a union rep to visit facilities. With our UFCW local pharmacy contracts expiring on November 1, 2025, we are scheduling Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike votes for Kaiser Pharmacy ONLY.
CLS
At the CLS table, we reached a tentative agreement late Monday night. Previously, only a few economic topics remained unresolved, but this week we secured contract upgrades, including increased longevity pay at each step and additional paid time for educational programs for benefited members.
Again, while this is a tentative agreement at the CLS table, we are not done. Our work continues until the national agreement is complete. We will also need to support our siblings in the pharmacy unit during their strike vote and if they go on strike. Look for more info from your Local UFCW Union about upcoming webinars where you can learn more about how you can support.
What’s Next
Despite our efforts, Kaiser has chosen to break the law by engaging in Unlawful Labor Practices (ULPs), blocking union reps from visiting you at work. This obstruction has damaged our ability to keep you informed and is a violation of the law. That’s why we are scheduling a ULP strike authorization vote for KP Pharmacy members.
The pharmacy ULP strike authorization vote will be held the week of October 13. Stay tuned for voting instructions and more details coming soon.
Take Action
To help all Kaiser members understand the Pharmacy ULP Strike Vote, we will hold webinars on Thursday, October 9th at 8am and 7pm.
CLS members – while you cannot strike at this time, we want you to attend the webinars below to learn more about how you can help support your siblings in the pharmacies while they vote and if they go on strike.

September 25, 2025 – Pharmacy Bargaining
How many times do we need to say “No” Kaiser?
We came to negotiations today ready to bargain with Kaiser on our pharmacy contract, but Kaiser once again gave us nothing. We want to come to a deal that we can recommend to you, but we’re not willing to accept anything less than we deserve. Kaiser is stuck on their issues and they’re just wasting our time.
We have National Bargaining scheduled for next Monday September 29 – Wednesday October 1 where we will be able to discuss this local contract. If nothing changes at those sessions, we may need to stand up and show Kaiser we’re fed up by conducting a strike vote.
Now is the time to show our unity. Sign the strike pledge, join the union actions below, and make sure Kaiser sees that UFCW members are standing shoulder to shoulder with our Alliance siblings and won’t back down in the face of their stall tactics.
- Sign the strike pledge to show Kaiser you are ready to do whatever it takes to win the strong contract we deserve.
- DO NOT participate in Kaiser Permanente’s People Pulse survey. This action is a direct response to stalled progress at the bargaining table and Kaiser’s unwillingness to fully recognize the value of healthcare professionals. No Progress, No Pulse! Wear your stickers to show your co-workers you are standing strong!

September 23, 2025 – Strike Vote General Update – Our Alliance Siblings Vote to Strike!
Across the country, healthcare workers are sending a powerful message to Kaiser Permanente: we are united, strong, and ready to fight for the fair contracts we deserve. Our siblings in UNAC/UHCP, USW Local 7600, Unite Here Local 5, OFNHP, and HNHP have overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike if necessary. These votes don’t mean an automatic strike, but they show Kaiser just how serious healthcare workers are about safe staffing, fair wages, and respect on the job.
For UFCW members, we are not in a position to take a strike vote or strike at this time. Our contracts are in effect until November 1, 2025 (Pharmacy) and February 1, 2026 (CLS/MLT), and we can’t strike until our contracts have expired.
But that does not mean we are standing on the sidelines. Our bargaining teams have been clear: we will not accept takeaways, and we will not let Kaiser disrespect our work. National bargaining resumes next week, and we will continue pressing Kaiser on the issues that matter most – wage increases, contract alignment, wage equity, and respect for the work we do every day.
If a strike is called by our Alliance siblings, you can support your union siblings by joining the strike on your off time – lunches, before or after your shift and days off. Now is the time to show our unity. Sign the strike pledge, join union actions, and make sure Kaiser sees that UFCW members are standing shoulder to shoulder with our Alliance siblings. Together, we are stronger, and together, we will win the fair contracts all healthcare workers deserve.
Sign the pledge here: https://forms.gle/QchZskf17pK5EXmK6
Learn more about a potential strike with these Frequently Asked Questions:
KAISER STRIKE FAQs
Below are some frequently asked questions we are hearing from our members about the contract and a possible Alliance of Healthcare Unions Unfair Labor Practice strike:
What is a strike?
A strike is when members vote to withhold their labor and do not report to work. Workers instead report to a picket line. A strike is a powerful tool for members to exercise and is always our last resort. Strikes are most effective when all employees in a struck location refuse to go to work.
What is an unfair labor practice (ULP)?
A ULP is when the company interferes with or discriminates against workers for their union activities. This violates federal labor law. Examples of a ULP include not allowing you to wear buttons, filming or keeping an eye on you at union actions, asking you if you would strike, or otherwise retaliating against you for union activity.
What is an unfair labor practice (ULP) strike?
A ULP strike is when workers walk off the job and/or do not go to work per their scheduled shift to protest unfair labor practices the company has allegedly committed.
What is an economic strike?
An economic strike is a work stoppage by workers seeking economic benefits such as wages, hours, or other working conditions. An economic strike happens when the employer, employees and their union are unable to reach a collective bargaining agreement and the most recent proposal on the table is unacceptable to employees.
How is an economic strike different from an unfair labor practice strike?
Striking to protest unfair labor practices (unlike an economic strike) means that workers can not be permanently replaced. In addition, workers can return to work without a contract being approved.
Would my job be protected while on an unfair labor practice strike?
Employees who strike to protest an unfair labor practice committed by their employer are called unfair labor practice strikers. When the strike ends, unfair labor practice strikers, absent serious misconduct on their part, are entitled to have their jobs back even if employees hired to do their work have to be discharged. (source: https://www.nlrb.gov/strikes)
What has to happen for us to strike?
These steps must be taken before we can strike:
- The contract must expire or otherwise not be in effect
- At least two-thirds of the workers in the bargaining unit who participate in the vote must vote to authorize negotiators to call a strike
- The negotiators (union leaders and workers on the bargaining committee) must decide WHEN to strike in order to make it most effective.
- Your union must give a 10-day notice to Kaiser with specific information on dates/locations. So you’ll know 10 days ahead of time when and where a strike would occur.
- A Union representative notifies workers it is time to walk out on the line.
AGAIN: DO NOT WALK OUT UNTIL YOUR UNION NOTIFIES YOU. If you walk out before that, you could be disciplined and/or fired by your employer.
What is the difference between a strike and a lockout?
A strike is an action initiated by the union while a lockout is an action initiated by the employer.
If we can’t strike, how can we support our union siblings?
You can go to the strike line on your off time – lunches and days off – to show your support. If your union has buttons, stickers, t-shirts, etc. wear them and tell your co-workers that you support the striking workers.
What if I have more questions?
There are many questions members will have throughout this process. Stay in touch with your steward, bargaining team member, or union representative throughout this process. The most important factor in winning a strong contract is our power and our solidarity. Staying informed is critical to staying united.

September 22, 2025 – CLS Bargaining
We’ve Made it Clear – We’re Not Accepting Takeaways in this New Contract
To be honest, we’re very frustrated with how bargaining is going on our CLS/MLT contract with Kaiser. We’ve been open from the start – we won’t accept any takeaways in our new contract, but Kaiser clearly isn’t hearing us. After bargaining for five months, they’ve now added new proposals that would take away from the current monetary provisions in the contract you are entitled to. We’re not going to let Kaiser bully us and waste our time.
Our brothers, sisters and siblings at UNAC, Steelworkers, Unite Here Local 5, OFNHP, and HNHP voted almost unanimously to strike and send a message to Kaiser, and we’re prepared to do everything we can within our legal rights to stand beside them. Make sure you sign the strike pledge to show your co-workers that we’re united in our commitment to protect and uplift our professions and the patients we serve.
If a strike is called, make a plan to join them on the picket line when you’re off the clock! Non-work time includes your lunch break!
We’re back at the National Bargaining Table next week on September 29 to October 1 to ensure all locals in the Alliance of Healthcare Unions get the fair contract we deserve. Those negotiations are covering big issues we know are important to you – wage increases, contract alignment, wage equity, union input on patient scheduling templates and more. At those negotiations we will also discuss the local CLS/MLT contract and try to resolve these outstanding issues. We’re determining if we need to schedule more bargaining dates locally and will let you know.
In the meantime, it’s important that Kaiser sees our solidarity and strength by taking part in the actions listed below:
- DO NOT participate in Kaiser Permanente’s People Pulse survey. This action is a direct response to stalled progress at the bargaining table and Kaiser’s unwillingness to fully recognize the value of healthcare professionals. No Progress, No Pulse! No Interest in Takeaways
We met with Kaiser for two days this week. Unfortunately, KP continues to push proposals that would take away important benefits from our contract. While conversations have been ongoing, no progress has been made, and much work remains to reach a fair CLS/MLT agreement. We return to local bargaining on Monday and will share a full update then.
From September 29 to October 1, we’ll be back at the National Bargaining table, banding together for the fair contract we deserve. In the meantime, let’s show our solidarity and strength by joining the actions listed below.

KP Workers Push for Fair Contract While Management Stalls
This week we brought our local Kern, CLS, and Pharmacy tables to national bargaining in an effort to make progress on resolving the remaining issues. We met for four days this week and unfortunately, little to no progress has been made.
- At the CLS table, management has wasted the majority of the days stating that they are gathering data and working on solutions but we have not seen the product of that yet.
- At the pharmacy table, while we reached a tentative agreement on language that enhances the grievance and arbitration procedure, we were not pleased to hear about management’s continued interest in bringing in agency workers after we had previously conveyed that this proposal goes against our core principles.
Across both tables, we have pressed management in interest-based discussions about the urgent need for economic upgrades like longevity pay. Our dedication to Kaiser Permanente deserves recognition and a fair contract. Investment in us is essential to retaining a strong workforce.
In the coming weeks we will return to the local tables to continue the fight for a fair contract. The CLS table will meet again on September 17 and 19, and the Pharmacy table on September 25.
Take Action
- Complete the strike pledge to show Kaiser you are ready to do whatever it takes, up to and including going on strike, to win the strong contract we deserve.

Kaiser Call to Action, September 15-30!

September 4, 2025 – CLS Bargaining
Progress at the Local Bargaining Table, But We’re Still Waiting to Discuss Economic Issues
We’ve met with Kaiser for three days this week, and we’re happy to report that we’ve made progress on our CLS/MLT contract. We were able to agree on per diem guidelines, including double time for per diem employees who work more than 12 hours and streamlining the process for per diem availability, which allows for permanent employees to take off time when they need it.
However, despite this movement today, Kaiser still hasn’t addressed our economic issues, which include upgrades that allow for MLT parity. We’ve scheduled new bargaining sessions during National Bargaining next week (September 9, 10 and 11), where we expect to address these most important economic issues.
To hear the updates from National Bargaining as soon as they’re available, join us for the 2025 National Bargaining Virtual Town Halls, scheduled for Thursday, September 11th at 6:00 PM and 8:30 PM (PT), and Friday, September 12th at 7:00 AM (PT). These calls will go over the latest developments in negotiations on our national contract and inform you about upcoming actions.

Some Progress Made; Kaiser Still Stalling on Economic Issues
After five months of bargaining with Kaiser, we finally made progress on our pharmacy contract today. We were able to agree on providing more full-time positions, establishing consistent staffing, and giving employees who change positions more flexibility to return to their former position.
However, despite this movement today, Kaiser is still stalling on addressing our economic issues, such as longevity pay and inpatient oncology premium pay. KAISER UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICE STRIKE FAQs
What if I have more questions?
There are many questions members will have throughout this process. Stay in touch with your steward, bargaining team member, or union representative throughout this process. The most important factor in winning a strong contract is our power and our solidarity. Staying informed is critical to staying united.

August 12, 2025 – CLS Bargaining
Why does Kaiser keep stalling?
We entered into these last two scheduled days with Kaiser to bargain our CLS/MLT contract, prepared to reach a deal that addressed our priority issues – from wages, work-life balance, and more. However, Kaiser spent the first day talking only about one issue – their requested per diem changes. On the second day, they arrived hours later than promised. Why does Kaiser keep stalling?
We have had some productive dialogue on issues like the grievance procedure, vacation payout and Kaiser’s change of the workday, but we are still far apart on important economic issues including longevity and sixth day pay. We think it’s important to honor workers who dedicate their time to Kaiser, and their silence speaks volumes about how they think about us.
We have agreed to meet with the company again on September 2, 3 and 4, 2025, but we don’t want these dates to be wasted. When we reconvene, Kaiser should be prepared to meet with us from the outset and reach a deal that we can confidently recommend to our colleagues.
In the meantime, National Bargaining will occur next week, and the Alliance of Healthcare Unions will be holding three National Bargaining Town Hall calls, where you can hear about the latest developments in negotiations on our national contract.
Don’t forget to join us for the next 2025 National Bargaining Virtual Town Halls, happening Thursday, August 21st at 6:00 PM and 8:30 PM (PT) and Friday, August 22nd at 7:00 AM (PT).

August 1, 2025 – Pharmacy Bargaining
We met with Kaiser Friday, August 1st for continued bargaining on our Kaiser Pharmacy contract. We stood strong on the principles that matter most, and made sure Kaiser heard us loud and clear.
We had several robust conversations in which management listened to the importance of how significant life events may impact our ability to commit to new roles. We also explored the option of utilizing mediation within the grievance procedure as a way to discuss and resolve issues prior to escalating to the arbitration process.
Kaiser continues to want to discuss on-call and temporary agency workers. We refuse to allow the company to explore ideas that could erode our part-time and full-time benefited positions and jeopardize the quality of care our patients receive. Additionally we expressed our opposition to the company’s interests in limiting the flexibility we have once we begin or transfer into a position.
We were in alignment on some issues and far apart on others. Despite our efforts to have interest-based conversations, we were met with resistance at the end of the day when the employer rejected several of our proposals.
This session was frustrating, to say the least. It seems that Kaiser is losing sight of the interest-based process and is not willing to consider our point of view. However, we know the battle is not over yet as we will continue to stay strong so we can achieve the best contract.
We will return to the bargaining table with Kaiser on August 29, 2025 with a federal mediator to facilitate the process.

July 29, 2025 – CLS Bargaining
Bargaining is an Uphill Battle
We met with Kaiser last Wednesday, July 23 and today, Tuesday, July 29, for more bargaining sessions on our Kaiser CLS/MLT contract.
We had good conversations about the importance of work-life balance and the need to have time to observe personal holidays. We work hard and deserve to have a day off so we can each celebrate a holiday or occasion that has individual meaning. KP has built its brand on providing people care so they could “thrive.” They take pride in their diversity, equity and inclusion so we urge them to hold true to their brand and provide workers with the space to express their cultural belonging.
We also spent some time discussing the use of per diems and we believe we are getting closer to a solution that improves staffing levels for KP while providing necessary protections for per diem workers.
We will return to the bargaining table with Kaiser on Monday, August 11, 2025, and Tuesday, August 12, 2025, to continue discussing our contract. But these are our last two days currently scheduled with the company. We’ve been meeting since April and it’s time Kaiser gets its act together. Kaiser needs to come back next session prepared to get a deal that we can recommend to you.
We did come to a tentative agreement ensuring the commitment of new hires, but we still have a lot of outstanding issues that Kaiser needs to address. Bargaining is always an uphill battle, but we’re almost at the peak. Wear your gold shirts and continue to take photos with our campaign signs! We have to show Kaiser that we are powerful.

July 18 , 2025 – Pharmacy Bargaining
Kaiser needs to stop dragging their feet and address our issues
We’ve been bargaining our new contract now for three months. Today, like all days, we came prepared. We presented 6 proposals (not new issues, interests we’ve been discussing from day one) relating to vacation, corrective action, longevity pay, reimbursement for the cost of certification and licensure renewal, and a 24-hour guarantee. We got no response.
After three months, they should be able to respond to something during our session.
Even worse, rather than addressing the serious concerns we have raised about staffing, Kaiser is proposing to use more on-call help and non-union temporary agency workers. We need to make it clear to Kaiser that these are not the solutions to their failure to hire sufficient staff to serve our patients.
We will return to the bargaining table with Kaiser on July 28, 2025, to continue discussing our pharmacy contract. Meanwhile, wear your gold shirts and take photos with our campaign signs!

July 8, 2025 – CLS Bargaining Update
We’re frustrated
We met with Kaiser on Wednesday, July 2, and today, Tuesday, July 8, to discuss our CLS/MLT contract where we continued to have discussions on our priorities. We had robust discussions about the grievance procedure as we want to find a way to expedite the process so that we can get a timely resolution to our issues. We also discussed how per diems are used and ways we can explore utilizing them more efficiently.
At the end of the day, we were able to sign one Tentative Agreement that contains small clean up language regarding timekeeping.
After today’s bargaining session, we’ve reached a point of frustration with Kaiser. We’ve had to remind the employer several times about embracing the interest-based bargaining mindset and the importance of working in partnership. We expected to be farther along after meeting for three months, but have not seen much progress. At our next session, we hope to see more movement from Kaiser on issues that are important to us.
We will meet with Kaiser again on July 23 and July 29. In the meantime, National Bargaining will occur next week, and the Alliance of Healthcare Unions will be holding three National Bargaining Town Hall calls, where you can hear about the latest developments in negotiations on our national contract.

June 20, 2025 – Pharmacy Bargaining
Continued Discussions and one TA!
We met with Kaiser today to negotiate our pharmacy contract, during which we had more discussions on our economic proposals, including increases for employees who have translation responsibilities, longevity pay to honor workers for their dedication to Kaiser Permanente and hazard pay for all of us who work in highly dangerous environments.
We also discussed an inpatient pharmacy technician differential, as well as a differential for anyone performing ambulatory oncology work, so they receive an increase for hours worked. We also spent time discussing options to streamline our grievance procedure, including a mediation step that will provide more guidance before escalating to arbitration.
We ended the day by reaching a tentative agreement with the company on the vacation scheduling period.
It was not all good news though. We discussed bereavement leave, and the company wants to take away our ability to support our spouses or partners when their family passes away. This is unacceptable and we will continue to work to ensure we can support our families no matter what they look like.
We will return to the bargaining table with Kaiser locally on July 18, 2025, to discuss our pharmacy contract further. Meanwhile, wear your yellow shirts and take photos with our campaign signs!

Kaiser Listened as we Spoke Out Today About Our Working Conditions
We met with Kaiser today to negotiate our pharmacy contract, during which we discussed creating more full-time positions and increasing opportunities for employees to secure these positions. We also spent time with the company discussing extending the probationary period to evaluate new hires and reviewing the transfer language to ensure employees are retained.
Lastly, we gave economic proposals to the company, including increases for employees who have translation responsibilities, longevity pay to honor workers for their dedication to Kaiser Permanente and hazard pay for all of us who work in highly dangerous environments.
We were able to speak out today on our economic proposals and told Kaiser how our working conditions in places like oncology are hazardous and make us worried to bring home toxins to our families. Our committee really spoke from the heart, moving all who were in the room. We felt heard and will continue to have conversations around these important issues in further sessions.
We also want to give you an update on National Bargaining. National Bargaining occurred June 3-5, and we reached Tentative Agreements with Kaiser on key retiree and pension benefits:
Additional retiree medical benefits for our retirees 85 and older
Increased retiree medical benefits
Improved pension benefits.
These wins mark incredible progress already, and are the direct result of our members’ unity, action, and ongoing engagement. At national bargaining, we also introduced a full economic proposal with our key priorities, including historic wage increases, standardized healthcare across units, and job protections to prevent outsourcing and keep KP work union work.

June 6, 2025 – CLS Bargaining Day 5
We’re Finally Getting All of Our Interests Out on the Table CLS/MLT Bargaining Update
We met with Kaiser today to bargain on our CLS/MLT contract, where we talked about potential compensation for high complexity testing, the integration of classification seniority for vacation bidding, and updating bereavement leave policies. We also spent time discussing options to streamline our grievance procedure, including a mediation step that will provide more guidance before escalating to arbitration.
We received more proposals from management that will require more discussions before our next session. They proposed adverse changes to our bereavement leave benefits that prevent us from having valuable time with our families during times of loss. However, the other proposals may advance our partnership interests and we look forward to exploring them further.
We do have good news.
The Alliance has reached four Tentative Agreements with Kaiser Permanente on key retiree and pension benefits:
Additional retiree medical benefits for our retirees 85 and older
Increased retiree medical benefits
Improved retiree medical benefits for IUOE Local 99 (MAS)
Improved pension benefit
These wins mark incredible progress already in just the first four days of bargaining, and are the direct result of our members’ unity, action, and ongoing engagement.

KP Not Interested in Solving Work/Life Balance – Management rejected our increased holiday, PTO and vacation cash out proposals
Today we met with Kaiser Permanente for our fourth day of bargaining on our pharmacy contract.
Despite work/life balance being one of our key interests, management rejected our proposals for increased holidays and personal time off, as well as an automatic cash out proposal for our hardworking members to be paid what they’re owed when they reach maximum accrual without having to request it.
They also made a proposal to create an on-call job status claiming that this would allow for more time off granting – however we already have strong staffing language therefore, we will further explore if any additional benefits exist.
One of the bright spots in our negotiations today was reaching a tentative agreement on convening to discuss a career pathway for outpatient members to receive the necessary training to qualify for positions within the inpatient setting.
We will meet with KP again on Friday, June 13th. In the meantime, we need to show KP we are not backing down from fighting for the contract we deserve. Here’s how you can stay engaged:

May 19, 2025 – CLS Bargaining
Kaiser Management is Slow and Steady, but Not Yet Ready
Today (5/16) we met with Kaiser Permanente for our fourth day of bargaining on our CLS/MLT contract. We started the day by reminding KP why we’re here and revisiting our core mindset of improving our morale and work/life balance, staffing for operational efficiency, and maintaining an available and committed workforce to continue to deliver quality care to our communities.
They were very resistant to working with us on our shared interest in maintaining a committed, stable workforce when it comes to the overwhelming number of per diems at some of our facilities compared to full-time or part-time employees.
KP also wasn’t ready to commit to putting state law regarding overtime into the contract, or to respond to our many non-economic proposals around classification seniority, PTO, the corrective action process, part-time conversion, or streamlining the grievance process that have been in their court since last month.
We made it clear we expect them to have answers to our non-economic proposals when we meet again on May 28.

April 29, 2025 – Pharmacy Bargaining Day 2
Slow but Steady: Kaiser Bargaining Update – What happened during our second bargaining session?
Today we met with Kaiser Permanente for our second day of bargaining on our pharmacy contract. We were able to come to an agreement on using gender neutral terms in the contract and had some productive conversations with the company regarding their interest around the probationary period. We ended the day by presenting a new interest to KP around bridging seniority when returning to previous positions.
The conversations were engaging, and we were able to express the areas of potential improvement in our facilities.
We will meet with KP again on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, and post another update on the progress made at that time. In the meantime, here are some upcoming activities where you can show KP that we’re united for the contract we deserve:
Attend the rally/picket action on Monday, May 5! April 7, 2025 – Pharmacy Bargaining
Work-life balance was the theme of the day
Today we met with Kaiser Permanente for our first day of bargaining on our pharmacy contract. We started the day by defining our priorities for this year’s contract negotiations and setting expectations on how we will achieve an agreement that benefits both the members and the communities we serve. Negotiations occur through interest-based bargaining and today we focused on our work-life balance. We discussed the time-off approval process and the company’s response time.
One of management’s interests, which we also discussed today, was our dedication to staying in positions longer. We followed up by reiterating our commitment to our patients and agreed to continue the conversation after conducting a member survey to get more information.
This was a good first day and we’re hopeful about our future ability to get the contract you deserve.
We meet with KP again on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, and we will post another update for you on what happened then. In the meantime, here’s how you can show KP that we’re united for the contract we deserve:

We Set Expectations and Cleaned up Some Language
Today we met with Kaiser Permanente for our first day of bargaining on our CLS/MLT contract. We started the day by defining our priorities for these contract negotiations and setting expectations on how we will achieve a contract that benefits both the members and the communities we serve.
These conversations were productive and by the end of the day, we had agreed on cleaning up some pieces of the language in the contract and have a good jumping off point for our next session next week.
We had interest based conversations and we’re hopeful about our future ability to get the contract you deserve.
We meet with KP again on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, and Thursday, April 30, 2025. We will post another update for you on what happened in those sessions after April 30th. In the meantime, here’s how you can show KP that we’re united for the contract we deserve:

April 1, 2025 – Pre-Bargaining Update
CLS Bargaining Starts Wednesday April 2! Pharmacy Bargaining Starts Monday April 7!
It’s time to get ready for 2025 bargaining! This year, Kaiser members throughout the country are coming together with one voice to fight for a contract that will better their futures. We’re 22 separate local unions but we’re all fighting for the same thing: a stronger future for workers and our patients.
A stronger future starts with a strong contract that provides:
- The best wages, not just fair wages
- Protections for current health benefits and pensions
- Staffing levels that allow us to focus on patient care and not burnout
- Partnership improvements
- Limitations for subcontracting
We can win a contract that does all of this and more by standing together and showing KP that you’re willing to fight and raise your voice to ensure a better workplace for you and your co-workers.
How Bargaining Will Work
The first scheduled bargaining session for CLS members with Kaiser is on April 2, 2025. Pharmacy bargaining starts on April 7, 2025, and national bargaining starts on May 6, 2025. At those bargaining sessions, we, the worker bargaining committee and leaders from your union UFCW, will present proposals to Kaiser based on the contract surveys you completed.
Throughout the process, both labor and management will have discussions regarding their various interests in making improvements that benefit both parties in an attempt to reach a “tentative agreement” on a new contract. This tentative agreement then goes to the members to review it and vote before becoming final. If a majority of workers vote to accept the contract, only then will it be ratified and go into effect.
Throughout bargaining, we, the bargaining committee, will send coordinated updates to keep you informed of what happened at each session, what the company said or did, and to let you know what you can do to fight for the contract you deserve.
